Treatments

Our clinic is dedicated to helping with a variety of urological conditions. Appointments can be arranged both in person or virtually in several leading private hospitals both in Southampton and Winchester.

Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH)

The prostate is a walnut-sized accessory gland of the male reproductive system situated below the bladder. As men age their prostates enlarge and by the age of 75 half the male population is affected. Nonetheless, treatment is only necessary if you have bothersome symptoms (see lower urinary tract symptoms).

There are various medical options to manage your symptoms. However, despite medical management your symptoms may persist quiring interventional/surgical treatment. Werner will discuss with you the various options available, and which may be best suited to you.

Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS)

Lower urinary tract symptoms are bothersome symptoms with urination which can affect both men and women. LUTS can be divided into storage and voiding issues, however you may experience a combination of either.

Storage bladder symptoms include:

  • Frequency – going to pass urine too frequently

  • Urgency – the uncomfortable inability to defer urination

  • Overactive bladder – a combination of these symptoms

  • Urge incontinence – the above mentioned symptoms with urine leakage

  • Nocturia – waking at night to urinate

Voiding bladder symptoms can occur if there is a restriction to the flow. These include:

  • Hesitancy – delayed start of urination

  • Poor flow

  • Intermittent stream

  • Dribbling after voiding

We will review your symptoms in our consultation and discuss which next steps are necessary to aid diagnosis and treatment.

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer amongst men in the UK. There are around 52000 new cases diagnosed each year nationwide. In some cases there is a family history of prostate cancer (and related cancers like breast and ovarian cancer) which may increase your risk.

If you have concerns it is best to see a specialist as prostate cancer often does not have any leading symptoms to identify it with.

Given Werner’s subspecialist interest he is expertly qualified to navigate you through concerns and enquiries you may have.

Hematuria

Blood in the urine (hematuria), whether non-visible or visible, requires further investigation. For non-visible urine a simple urine dip stick analysis can be informative.

Common causes can be infection of the urinary tract or stones, however underlying cancer should be ruled out.

Bladder cancer

Bladder cancer can affect 1 in 130 women and 1 in 55 men in the UK. It is important to be aware of the leading symptom of bladder cancer which is painless hematuria (non-/visible blood in the urine). Other associated symptoms can include lower urinary tract symptoms.

Testicular cancer

Testicular cancer is unusual in that it commonly affects younger men and is the most common cancer in men aged between 15-49. It is important to self-examine and to present to your GP or Urology Specialist if you discover any new scrotal lumps. Be aware of a family history of testicular cancer.

Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections are most common in women with a life-time risk of developing a urinary tract infection of 10-20%. There can be various causes requiring a thorough consultation to assess potential risk factors. Speak to Werner about diagnostics and treatment options.

Penile and scrotal conditions

Common penoscrotal conditions (lumps and bumps) include balanitis, phimosis, hydroceles, epididymal cysts and varicoceles. These conditions can be bothersome and will then require medical or surgical management. Cancers are relatively rare, however you should seek expert opinion if you have concerns.

Erectile Dysfunction/Men’s Health

Erectile dysfunction is more common than anticipated and can certainly have a negative impact on your quality of life. Being a Fellow of the European Board of Sexual Medicine, Werner can offer expert advice and guidance.
